simple homemade hummus

Another food I recently came across is hummus. While I really liked it, it's on the pricey side ($2.50 for a small tub), so it was a "special" treat.  It turns out, if you have a blender it is really simple to make, so we have it all the time now. A can of garbanzo beans is only $1, and the other costs are minimal (after the initial purchase of the tahini & olive oil), so making it at home is very economical!

Found the recipe here.
  • 1 16 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans (I've found that Goya brand comes out smoother)
  • 1/4 cup liquid from can of chickpeas
  • 3-5 tablespoons lemon juice (depending on taste)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Drain liquid from beans into bowl. Add all other ingredients to blender and add 1/4 cup reserved liquid. Blend for about 1 minute. If it still looks too thick and not well blended, slowly add a little liquid, blending until the consistency is right.

*My thoughts, but please don't send me hate mail if you are a hummus aficionado...I like it with all the lemon, but started with the minimum and added some until I found what I liked. If you don't have tahini, you can leave it out completely, but it will have a stronger bean taste. You can probably get by with peanut butter (although I'm allergic, so I haven't tried) or you can buy soy butter since tahini is a soy paste. Maybe that would be closer in taste? Again, I haven't tried, but I think it would add a little to the taste and make it less "beany." I live in a small town and ended up having to buy the tahini online. Also, I've read that tahini can spoil quickly, so I keep mine in the fridge.

One can fits perfectly into the Magic Bullet (which I highly recommend!)

how much one can makes! it's not a huge tub, but it's bigger than the store bought ones.

here I made a cilantro & lime dip. Used lime juice instead of lemon and added a small bunch of cilantro. Oh the possibilities!

    1. Hummus is amazing! I've never tried making my own before, but it sounds so simple I might have to try it.

And I've been considering buying a magic bullet for a while now, but have been skeptical.

    2. I've had mine for 5 years and we use several times a week for smoothies. I won't hesitate to buy it again once it finally dies!

    3. Yum! I love homemade hummus. It always tastes so much nicer then the bought stuff too cos you can alter it to your own tastes (I always add extra garlic :) ). I always make mine without tahini because it gives my son a rash and I don't really notice the difference although any beany taste is probably overwhelmed by all the garlic I use lol :P

Stopping by from the Meet & Greet hop, you have some yummy sounding recipes here! That blueberry cake looks delicious too :D
